Halloween on Washington Avenue
Washington Avenue is famous for its trick-or-treating, and amazing decorations during the Halloween season. The 1978 horror film, Halloween, takes place in a town called Haddonfield, Illinois. A fictitious place, but one deliberately chosen as the film's cinematographer, Debra Hill, was born in Haddonfield, NJ! The 11th film in the franchise was released in 2018 and picked up where the original left off.
While the entire town of Haddonfield has embraced the Halloween season, Washington Avenue takes it one step further. Each year, the residents decorate their homes with amazing creativity and spirit. Walking along Washington Avenue in October is like taking a stroll through a movie set. Some homes have intricate back stories surrounding their decor, while others have created interactive decorations; at one particular home, people are invited to walk through their porch that has been transformed into a carnival tent. Most homes along the street create an entire “theme” around their decorations; some past themes include “Dead and Breakfast,” “The Witches of Washington,” and “Stranger Things.”
Another reason Washington Avenue has become synonymous with the best trick-or-treating in the area is because Central Elementary School and Haddonfield Middle School are at the end of Washington Avenue. On Halloween, children go home at lunchtime and change into their costumes. When they return, the school has a Halloween parade ending with a party. At dismissal, the children are already dressed in their costumes and ready to trick-or-treat. The obvious direction is always straight down Washington Avenue. Last year, the borough even closed the street and had a tent in the middle as a meeting place for parents and their children. Washington Avenue’s Halloween spirit cannot be missed and is truly something spectacular to be a part of!
